Which is better, Nutrafol serum, Nutrafol pills or Crowned?
Crowned. Nutrafol wants you to buy its pills and its serum. The pills go through your stomach first. The serum has no saw palmetto and no rosemary. Crowned puts five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary in one light serum. Rub it in each day for fuller, thicker-looking hair.

Nutrafol's own answer: buy both
Nutrafol's FAQ asks if the serum works faster than the pills. Its answer is "No." It says the serum "complements" the pills. Its top pick is the Fullest Hair Kit. That's the serum and the pills, sold together.
So Nutrafol never picks a side. It sells you two. Look at Nutrafol's prices on Oct 19, 2026. The pills cost $79 a month on subscription. The serum costs $49. Nutrafol says one bottle lasts one month if you cover your whole scalp. That's $128 a month, way more than thin hair should ever cost you.
Crowned by Her Part picks a side. It's one leave-on serum for the spots you care about. And it has the saw palmetto Nutrafol hides in a pill.
The pills: four big capsules and a queasy stomach
Women's Balance is four capsules a day with a meal. A lot of women hate that. "Huge hard plastic pills. I can't swallow," one Trustpilot reviewer wrote. On Reddit, another said "4 pills a day made me feel so queasy, even if I took 2 in morning, 2 at night."
Then comes the long wait. "$1200 later. No difference. None. Great commercials, though." A 75-year-old on her seventh bottle wrote "i am not seeing any new growth." Quitting stings too. One woman quit after months of pills. She wrote "My hair is thinner than when I started."
We went through every pill complaint in Crowned vs Nutrafol. A hair pill has to get past your gut and your blood. Only then does it reach your head. And biotin does little for hair unless a blood test shows you're low.
On other medicines? Ask your doctor before any hair pill, and tell them about biotin before bloodwork (FDA).
The serum: no saw palmetto, no rosemary
Nutrafol puts saw palmetto in its pills. Its serum has none, and no rosemary either. The star ingredients are ashwagandha "exosomes," Irish moss, maca, pea sprout and sea buckthorn.
Perfect Hair Health, a hair science site, looked for studies on ashwagandha exosomes and hair. It found none. And the "visibly thicker" promise on Nutrafol's serum page points to one source: "Nutrafol, Data on File, 2023." That's the company's own internal file, not a published study.
Crowned by Her Part has both of the ingredients Nutrafol left out. Saw palmetto and rosemary each have published human hair studies. In Crowned, they sit right on your scalp with five peptides, in a light, water-based serum.
Greasy roots, an itchy scalp and a half-full bottle
Nutrafol calls its serum "lightweight" and "non-greasy." Plenty of buyers say the opposite. On Reddit, one woman said "It makes my hair look extremely greasy. Can't do it." Another wrote "Makes mine greasy and I need to use it around my face. I definitely wasted my money."
On r/Menopause, one woman put it flat: "I tried the scalp serum and all it did was irritate my scalp. Complete waste of money."
The store reviews pile on. "The 1oz size bottle was only half full upon arrival." "My hair looks wet after it dries & feels gross." Two women said the paint on the glass bottle flakes off and lands in their hair. Another finished a whole bottle and got "Very meh," with no results. One Amazon buyer used the pills, shampoo, conditioner and serum. Her verdict: "My hair is as thin as it was before I used it."
Crowned is water-based. Water is the first ingredient on the label. It sinks in fast and leaves your roots clean. Wear it out the door, and nobody can tell.
Light on your scalp, loud in the mirror
Five peptides, saw palmetto, rosemary and Scutellaria root in a water-based serum that disappears into your scalp. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair you stop hiding under scarves and good lighting.
Pills or a leave-on serum: which one wins
A leave-on serum wins. It sits on the exact spots you want fuller, all day and all night. Nothing has to get past your stomach first. There's no meal to time it with. And there's no extra pill for a counter that's already full. Viviscal is another daily pill. See how Crowned beats Viviscal tablets.
A serum is only as strong as what's inside it. Nutrafol's serum skips saw palmetto and rosemary, two hair ingredients with published human studies. Crowned by Her Part has both, plus five peptides. That's how one bottle beats the pills and the serum. See how other serums score in best hair serum for women over 50 and does scalp serum work.
The Fingertip Trick
Find the spot where your hair looks thinnest. Put a few drops of Crowned straight onto the scalp there, then use your fingertips in small, slow circles until the serum disappears. Leave it on. Style as usual, or go to bed. That's the whole routine, once a day, every day, and it's the reason Crowned lands on your scalp instead of in your stomach or all over your pillow.
Crowned by Her Part is water-based (water is the first ingredient on the label) and made with five peptides, four of them modeled on growth factors studied in the hair cycle (aFGF, bFGF, IGF-1 and VEGF) plus a conditioning peptide, along with arginine, saw palmetto, Scutellaria root, rosemary, eucalyptus, soybean germ and wheat germ extracts, and vitamin E.
What the ingredient research shows:
- Rosemary: in a randomized trial of 100 men with thinning hair, rosemary oil performed on par with 2% minoxidil at six months, with less scalp itching in the rosemary group (Panahi et al., Skinmed, 2015).
- Saw palmetto: 50 men using topical saw palmetto products had higher average and terminal hair counts at 12 and 24 weeks (Wessagowit et al., Australasian Journal of Dermatology, 2016).
- Growth-factor peptides: topical FGF-1 and FGF-2 brought on the hair growth phase earlier and kept it going longer in mouse studies (Lin et al., BioMed Research International, 2015).
Verdict: Crowned wins
Nutrafol can't choose between its pills and its serum, so it sells you both. The pills mean four capsules a day with your stomach in the middle. The serum leaves out saw palmetto and rosemary and leans on its own private data. Crowned by Her Part puts five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary in one light, water-based serum. It goes right where you want fuller, thicker-looking hair. More matchups: Crowned vs Nutrafol, Crowned vs Vegamour and Crowned vs The Ordinary.
What you'll notice with Crowned, and when
Hair runs on a slow cycle: each strand grows for years, rests for two to three months, then makes way for the next (Paus and Cotsarelis, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). Crowned is built for that cycle, so the changes stack up in a clear order.
- From the first days: a light, water-based serum that sinks in, clean roots, and a Fingertip Trick you'll actually look forward to.
- In the first weeks: hair that feels softer, with more gloss and bounce. Eucalyptus extract in a scalp lotion improved measured gloss and bounce with ongoing use (Mamada et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2008).
- Over the first two months: more lift at the root and hair that looks thicker where it grows from.
- Months three to six: fuller-looking coverage where you used to see scalp, a ponytail with weight in it, and photos that look like you again. That's the window the ingredient studies measured: topical saw palmetto at 12 and 24 weeks, rosemary oil at six months.
Use it every day. Daily use builds the result, and by Day 90 the mirror shows it.
