Crowned vs Viviscal: 180 fish tablets later, and the mirror hasn't moved

Viviscal asks you to swallow two big fish and shellfish tablets every day for three to six months. Its unhappy customers say they did exactly that and saw "absolutely no change," and some got hives, stomach trouble or more shedding along the way. Crowned by Her Part skips your stomach entirely: a water-based peptide serum that goes on your scalp for fuller, thicker-looking hair. Crowned wins.

Short answer: Viviscal asks you to swallow two big fish and shellfish tablets every day for three to six months. You counted them out every morning. Two tablets with breakfast, every day, box after box. Three months in, you held up a hand mirror to the back of your head and saw the same scalp you saw on day one.

We went through 26 negative Viviscal reviews from Amazon, Trustpilot and Reddit. The pattern is hard to miss.

Which is better, Crowned or Viviscal?

Crowned. Viviscal is two fish and shellfish tablets a day for months. Crowned skips your stomach. It is a water-based peptide serum that goes right on your scalp. Use it every morning for fuller, thicker-looking hair.

Three months, six months, "no changes at all"

No visible results is the top Viviscal complaint. One Amazon reviewer took all 180 pills, every day, and wrote "no changes at all." Another did the full three months "as suggested" and said her hair "is still thin, it still falls out, nothing is different." A Spanish-language reviewer did the full six months and said not to throw your money away. On Reddit, one woman did Viviscal and oral minoxidil together for months and still wasn't seeing a difference.

There's a reason this keeps happening. Unless you're actually low in something, there's little for a tablet to fix, and whatever you swallow gets shared with your whole body before your scalp sees any of it.

Crowned goes on the exact spots you care about, with five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary. Viviscal has none of the three.

Hives, rashes and a stomach that won't settle

The second biggest complaint is side effects. "First dose broke me out in terrible hives." "Allergic to all of the mollusks in this product." One woman with no history of seafood allergy said two days in she was so itchy her face broke out in small red rashes, and it lingered for days after she stopped. Others report skin breakouts, headaches, and stomach and intestinal problems bad enough to send one reviewer for medical tests. UK Trustpilot reviews describe nausea, cramps and bloating even when taken with food.

Viviscal contains fish and oyster. If you're allergic to fish or shellfish, it's off the table.

Crowned has no fish and no shellfish, and it never touches your stomach. It's a cosmetic leave-on that stays on your scalp. If your skin is sensitive, try it on a small spot first.

Light on your scalp, loud in the mirror

Five peptides, saw palmetto, rosemary and Scutellaria root in a water-based serum that disappears into your scalp. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair you stop hiding under scarves and good lighting.

The tablets that made the shed worse

Several reviewers say their shedding went up. "If anything I experienced more shedding." Another stopped because her hair started falling every time she washed and combed it. And one reviewer summed it up in five words: "It's grew everywhere but head."

Sudden, heavy shedding deserves a doctor's visit to rule out a medical cause. Crowned has no drug in it and nothing that asks you to wait out a shed. It's daily cosmetic scalp care, and your two-week photos keep the score.

Two large pills a day, and you pay for every one

The tablets are big, and two a day wears women down. A Yahoo Health tester saw less hair in the shower but called taking "two large supplements a day" a challenge she wasn't sure she'd keep up. Reviewers call it "so expensive" and "not cheap," and complain it isn't returnable once you've opened it.

Months of pills you dread, at a price that adds up fast, for a mirror that doesn't move. Crowned is a few drops and the Fingertip Trick.

The Fingertip Trick

Part your hair where it looks thinnest. Put a few drops of Crowned straight onto the scalp there, then use your fingertips in small, slow circles until the serum disappears. Leave it on. Style as usual, or go to bed. That's the whole routine, once a day, every day, and it's the reason Crowned lands on your scalp instead of in your stomach or all over your pillow.

Crowned by Her Part is water-based (water is the first ingredient on the label) and made with five peptides, four of them modeled on growth factors studied in the hair cycle (aFGF, bFGF, IGF-1 and VEGF) plus a conditioning peptide, along with arginine, saw palmetto, Scutellaria root, rosemary, eucalyptus, soybean germ and wheat germ extracts, and vitamin E.

What the ingredient research shows:

  • Rosemary: in a randomized trial of 100 men with thinning hair, rosemary oil performed on par with 2% minoxidil at six months, with less scalp itching in the rosemary group (Panahi et al., Skinmed, 2015).
  • Saw palmetto: 50 men using topical saw palmetto products had higher average and terminal hair counts at 12 and 24 weeks (Wessagowit et al., Australasian Journal of Dermatology, 2016).
  • Growth-factor peptides: topical FGF-1 and FGF-2 brought on the hair growth phase earlier and kept it going longer in mouse studies (Lin et al., BioMed Research International, 2015).

Verdict: Crowned wins

Viviscal's own customers report months of no visible change, hives and stomach trouble, more shedding and pills they could barely face. Crowned by Her Part puts five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary straight onto your scalp in a light, water-based serum, with no fish, no shellfish and no stomach involved. For fuller, thicker-looking hair after 50, Crowned is the clear choice. More: Crowned vs Nutrafol and biotin for menopause hair loss.

What you'll notice with Crowned, and when

Hair runs on a slow cycle: each strand grows for years, rests for two to three months, then makes way for the next (Paus and Cotsarelis, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). Crowned is built for that cycle, so the changes stack up in a clear order.

  • From the first days: a light, water-based serum that sinks in, clean roots, and a Fingertip Trick you'll actually look forward to.
  • In the first weeks: hair that feels softer, with more gloss and bounce. Eucalyptus extract in a scalp lotion improved measured gloss and bounce with ongoing use (Mamada et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2008).
  • Over the first two months: more lift at the root and hair that looks thicker where it grows from.
  • Months three to six: fuller-looking coverage where you used to see scalp, a ponytail with weight in it, and photos that look like you again. That's the window the ingredient studies measured: topical saw palmetto at 12 and 24 weeks, rosemary oil at six months.

Take a photo of the top of your head on day one and every two weeks after. Daily use builds the result, and the photos show it.
