Crowned vs Rogaine for Women: the foam you can't quit

Women's Rogaine is a 5% minoxidil drug foam. Its own label warns of itching, a shed in the first weeks, facial hair and heart symptoms. It says you lose the new hair 3 to 4 months after you stop. Minoxidil is also toxic to cats. Crowned by Her Part is a cosmetic, water-based peptide serum with no drug in it. It gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair. Crowned wins.

The itch that won't quit

The label says it straight. The most common side effects are itching and other skin irritation on the scalp. The foam has alcohol in it. The label warns it burns your eyes and sensitive skin.

Women describe it in harder words. "I just started using the rogaine foam too and the scalp itch is already unbearable." Another woman used Women's Rogaine 5% foam for six weeks with no trouble. Then she was "suffering with extreme itching on my scalp ears and even on my face." A third quit after 8 months: "the scalp irritation got unbearable..itching, dryness, flaky patches."

Crowned has no alcohol and no minoxidil. It's a water-based cosmetic serum that sinks in clean. If your skin is sensitive, try it on a small spot first, like any new skincare.

A shed before anything good

Here is a line from the Rogaine label. When you start, your hair loss can keep going for the first 2 weeks. Women on Reddit call it the dread shed. "My doctor put me on Minoxidil 5% foam, and the dread shed for me has been crazy," one wrote.

Then you wait. The label says some women need at least 6 months before they see anything. And the first new hairs come in "soft, downy, and colorless."

Crowned has no drug, and no shed story to sell you. In the first weeks, your hair feels softer, with more gloss and bounce. It builds from there.

Fuzz on your face

The label tells you to stop if unwanted facial hair shows up. It says unwanted hair has been reported on the face and on other spots on the body. The label says to let the foam dry 2 to 4 hours before bed. That keeps it off your pillow and your cheeks.

Over 50, a lot of women already pluck a few chin hairs. Nobody wants a drug that adds more. Crowned by Her Part has no minoxidil. You put it on, and you go to bed when you want.

Greasy roots right after you wash

You wash your hair, dry it, then put the foam on. One woman on Women's Rogaine 5% foam said that's when "my hair roots will immediately look greasy, as if i didn't even wash it." Another said "It does make my hair crunchy like a mousse would."

Greasy, stiff hair separates and shows more scalp. Crowned is water-based, so your roots stay clean and soft.

Light on your scalp, loud in the mirror

Five peptides, saw palmetto, rosemary and Scutellaria root in a water-based serum that disappears into your scalp. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair you stop hiding under scarves and good lighting.

Heart warnings and a flammable can

Women's Rogaine is a drug, and the box reads like one. Ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease. Stop and call a doctor for chest pain, a racing heartbeat, faintness, dizziness, sudden weight gain, or swollen hands or feet. The can is "Extremely Flammable." No flame or smoking while you put it on, or right after.

One woman's side effects from topical minoxidil got worse in perimenopause: "Heart palpitations, anxiety and insomnia."

Pregnant, nursing, or have a heart condition? Talk to your doctor before any minoxidil.

Crowned carries none of those warnings. It's a cosmetic serum with five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary.

Keep your cat off your pillow

Minoxidil is toxic to cats and dogs, says the American Academy of Dermatology. A few drops can make a cat so sick it needs life-saving vet care. Cats get it by licking your scalp or lying on your pillow. A 2025 review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology tracked cats exposed to minoxidil. Ten of the 68 died. One Trustpilot reviewer summed up Rogaine in four words: "Will kill your cat."

Crowned has no minoxidil, so there's no minoxidil on your pillow.

For life, or lose it

The label is clear here too. You have to keep using it to keep any new hair. Stop, and you will probably lose that new hair in 3 to 4 months. Each can lasts two months. So it's a new can every two months, for good.

It also comes with rules. The label says don't use it if you don't know why your hair is thinning. Same if nobody in your family has thinning hair. Color your hair? Wash the foam out before the color goes on, and skip it for 24 hours after.

Already on Rogaine? Don't stop or switch without your doctor.

Crowned is a cosmetic serum with none of those drug rules. See more drug-free options in minoxidil alternatives for women.

The Fingertip Trick

Find the spot where your hair looks thinnest. Put a few drops of Crowned straight onto the scalp there, then use your fingertips in small, slow circles until the serum disappears. Leave it on. Style as usual, or go to bed. That's the whole routine, once a day, every day, and it's the reason Crowned lands on your scalp instead of in your stomach or all over your pillow.

Crowned by Her Part is water-based (water is the first ingredient on the label) and made with five peptides, four of them modeled on growth factors studied in the hair cycle (aFGF, bFGF, IGF-1 and VEGF) plus a conditioning peptide, along with arginine, saw palmetto, Scutellaria root, rosemary, eucalyptus, soybean germ and wheat germ extracts, and vitamin E.

What the ingredient research shows:

  • Rosemary: in a randomized trial of 100 men with thinning hair, rosemary oil performed on par with 2% minoxidil at six months, with less scalp itching in the rosemary group (Panahi et al., Skinmed, 2015).
  • Saw palmetto: 50 men using topical saw palmetto products had higher average and terminal hair counts at 12 and 24 weeks (Wessagowit et al., Australasian Journal of Dermatology, 2016).
  • Growth-factor peptides: topical FGF-1 and FGF-2 brought on the hair growth phase earlier and kept it going longer in mouse studies (Lin et al., BioMed Research International, 2015).

Verdict: Crowned wins

Women's Rogaine asks a lot. There's the itch and the shed at the start. There are facial hair and heart warnings, a flammable can and a risk to your cat. And you can never stop without losing what you gained. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair with five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary in a light, water-based serum, and no drug. What you'll notice with Crowned, and when

Hair runs on a slow cycle: each strand grows for years, rests for two to three months, then makes way for the next (Paus and Cotsarelis, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). Crowned is built for that cycle, so the changes stack up in a clear order.

  • From the first days: a light, water-based serum that sinks in, clean roots, and a Fingertip Trick you'll actually look forward to.
  • In the first weeks: hair that feels softer, with more gloss and bounce. Eucalyptus extract in a scalp lotion improved measured gloss and bounce with ongoing use (Mamada et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2008).
  • Over the first two months: more lift at the root and hair that looks thicker where it grows from.
  • Months three to six: fuller-looking coverage where you used to see scalp, a ponytail with weight in it, and photos that look like you again. That's the window the ingredient studies measured: topical saw palmetto at 12 and 24 weeks, rosemary oil at six months.

Use it every day. Daily use builds the result, and by Day 90 the mirror shows it.
