Crowned vs Hers: a drug, a membership, and a shed you're told to push through

Hers sells prescription drugs wrapped in a membership. Its own customers complain about charges they never agreed to, fights to cancel, headaches, peeling scalps, facial hair and a sticky topical that mats hair together. Crowned by Her Part is a cosmetic, water-based peptide serum. No consult, no prescription, no drug. Just fuller, thicker-looking hair. Crowned wins.

Fuller, thicker-looking hair without the pills, the drugs or the grease

Crowned by Her Part is a water-based, leave-on peptide scalp serum. A few drops on your thin spots, the Fingertip Trick, and you get on with your day. It sinks in, leaves your roots clean, and builds fuller, thicker-looking hair.

Get Crowned by Her Part

It looked so easy. Answer a few questions, get a prescription in the mail, never sit in a waiting room. Then the charges started showing up, the scalp started itching, and the hair you were trying to save started falling faster.

We went through 28 negative Hers reviews from Amazon, Trustpilot, Sitejabber, BBB and Reddit. The top complaint surprised us. It's the billing.

Which is better, Crowned or Hers?

Crowned. Hers sells drugs inside a membership, and its own buyers talk of surprise charges, peeling scalps and face hair. Crowned is a water-based peptide serum with no drug and no consult. Rub it in each day for fuller, thicker-looking hair.

The membership you can't get out of

Subscription and cancellation is the single biggest pile of Hers complaints. Customers describe a "$150 membership fee on top of" their medication, a "$234" charge before any consult or approval, and a surprise second payment five months in that they only found on their card statement. Others say they cancelled and were told it only applied to future refills, or that they couldn't cancel at all. USA Today's review roundup said the most common complaints are about figuring out how to cancel, with refunds rarely given.

You came for your hair. You got a billing relationship.

Crowned is a serum. You buy a bottle of fuller, thicker-looking hair. There's no doctor's consult to sit through and no prescription to keep renewing.

Headaches, peeling scalps and hair on your face

Minoxidil is a drug, and drugs have side effects. Hers customers report waking up with a migraine every morning after applying it, headaches that started every single time, and feeling lightheaded until a Hers doctor told them to stop. One Amazon reviewer described her scalp peeling so badly it looked like severe dandruff, with an itchy rash spreading to her face, neck, arms and back, still there two weeks after she quit. Others report breakouts along the hairline and temples.

Then the one nobody wants. A Reddit user said her thinning spots barely changed, but the peach fuzz on her face grew into long, dark-looking hairs. Hers' own page says 15% of patients in a 1,404-person oral minoxidil study had unwanted hair growth.

Crowned has no minoxidil, no finasteride and no spironolactone. It's a cosmetic leave-on that stays on your scalp. If your skin is sensitive, try it on a small spot first, like any new skincare.

Light on your scalp, loud in the mirror

Five peptides, saw palmetto, rosemary and Scutellaria root in a water-based serum that disappears into your scalp. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair you stop hiding under scarves and good lighting.

Start your Crowned routine

"Doesn't make any difference at all"

That's one Amazon reviewer, in all caps. Others quit before they ever saw anything because the side effects came first. And Hers' own page tells you to expect shedding in the first two to four weeks, so the early weeks can look worse before anyone can say whether it's working. Reddit users complain about exactly that initial shed. The women's minoxidil label itself says it will not work for everyone.

Hair thinning, then thinning faster on purpose, is a hard thing to sign up for at 55.

Crowned skips that. No drug, no planned shed. Softer, glossier hair in the first weeks and fuller-looking coverage by months three to six, and your two-week photos show you where you are. Sudden, heavy shedding is always worth a doctor's visit to rule out a medical cause.

Sticky, matted, and "too bad"

One Trustpilot reviewer spent $147 on Hers' minoxidil blend and said it left the area "sticky and matted the hair together." She says the Hers doctor admitted some people have that problem, and that was that. Others say it made their hair greasy or "smelled like alcohol and dried my hair." Even fans of oral minoxidil on Reddit point out the topical makes hair greasy.

Matted, greasy strands clump together and show more scalp. That's the look you were trying to get rid of.

Crowned is water-based. It sinks in, leaves no film, and lets your roots lift.

The Fingertip Trick

Part your hair where it looks thinnest. Put a few drops of Crowned straight onto the scalp there, then use your fingertips in small, slow circles until the serum disappears. Leave it on. Style as usual, or go to bed. That's the whole routine, once a day, every day, and it's the reason Crowned lands on your scalp instead of in your stomach or all over your pillow.

Crowned by Her Part is water-based (water is the first ingredient on the label) and made with five peptides, four of them modeled on growth factors studied in the hair cycle (aFGF, bFGF, IGF-1 and VEGF) plus a conditioning peptide, along with arginine, saw palmetto, Scutellaria root, rosemary, eucalyptus, soybean germ and wheat germ extracts, and vitamin E.

What the ingredient research shows:

  • Rosemary: in a randomized trial of 100 men with thinning hair, rosemary oil performed on par with 2% minoxidil at six months, with less scalp itching in the rosemary group (Panahi et al., Skinmed, 2015).
  • Saw palmetto: 50 men using topical saw palmetto products had higher average and terminal hair counts at 12 and 24 weeks (Wessagowit et al., Australasian Journal of Dermatology, 2016).
  • Growth-factor peptides: topical FGF-1 and FGF-2 brought on the hair growth phase earlier and kept it going longer in mouse studies (Lin et al., BioMed Research International, 2015).

Verdict: Crowned wins

Hers customers describe surprise charges, cancel fights, headaches, peeling scalps, facial hair, an early shed and a sticky topical. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair with a water-based peptide serum, saw palmetto and rosemary, with no drug, no consult and no membership to escape. What you'll notice with Crowned, and when

Hair runs on a slow cycle: each strand grows for years, rests for two to three months, then makes way for the next (Paus and Cotsarelis, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). Crowned is built for that cycle, so the changes stack up in a clear order.

  • From the first days: a light, water-based serum that sinks in, clean roots, and a Fingertip Trick you'll actually look forward to.
  • In the first weeks: hair that feels softer, with more gloss and bounce. Eucalyptus extract in a scalp lotion improved measured gloss and bounce with ongoing use (Mamada et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2008).
  • Over the first two months: more lift at the root and hair that looks thicker where it grows from.
  • Months three to six: fuller-looking coverage where you used to see scalp, a ponytail with weight in it, and photos that look like you again. That's the window the ingredient studies measured: topical saw palmetto at 12 and 24 weeks, rosemary oil at six months.

Take a photo of the top of your head on day one and every two weeks after. Daily use builds the result, and the photos show it.
