Crowned vs Keranique: straw-dry hair, a burning scalp, and charges you never agreed to

Keranique sells a 2% minoxidil drug inside a multi-step system, and its customers complain about no visible results, hair that feels like straw, scalps that burn, heart warnings on the box and auto-ship charges after they thought they'd cancelled. Crowned by Her Part is a cosmetic, water-based peptide serum. One bottle, no drug, fuller, thicker-looking hair. Crowned wins.

You saw the ad, ordered the "trial," and figured that was the end of it. Then your hair started feeling dry and stiff, your scalp got sore, and another charge showed up on your card.

We went through 42 negative Keranique reviews from Amazon, Trustpilot, ComplaintsBoard, Reddit and BBB. Here's what keeps coming up.

Which is better, Crowned or Keranique?

Crowned. Keranique is a minoxidil drug in a kit with many steps, and buyers talk of dry hair, a burning scalp and charges they did not want. Crowned is one water-based peptide serum with no drug. Use it each day for fuller, thicker-looking hair.

Months of the full system, no change in the mirror

No visible results is the top Keranique complaint. "Don't use. Noticed nothing." "There is no change in my hair at all." "I feel this item is not working." One reviewer pointed out that even if you get some result, you have to keep using it forever to hold on to it, and the drug label itself says hair loss returns when you stop.

Women bought a whole routine of shampoo, conditioner, foam and treatment and ended up with the same scalp showing through.

Crowned is one water-based serum with five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary, and the changes stack up in a clear order you can track in two-week photos.

Hair like straw, and a foam that won't foam

Texture and feel is complaint number two. "Made my hair feel like straw." "Makes hair stiff." "Left my hair more frizzy and dry even after using the conditioner liberally." "Went on super thick, could not style my hair after it dried, very hard to wash out." Others say the shampoo left knots they needed a detangler for, and that color-treated hair needed extra products to avoid breakage.

Add the hardware failures: foam cans that sputter liquid, dispensers that quit halfway, tips that break off, and returns denied.

Dry, stiff, tangled hair looks thinner. Crowned is water-based with glycerin, soy and wheat germ extracts and vitamin E, and it leaves hair soft with more gloss and bounce in the first weeks.

Light on your scalp, loud in the mirror

Five peptides, saw palmetto, rosemary and Scutellaria root in a water-based serum that disappears into your scalp. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair you stop hiding under scarves and good lighting.

Scalp burns and a heart warning on the box

Minoxidil is a drug. Keranique reviewers say it "burnt my scalp," left it "sore, hyper sensitive to sunlight and red," and set off migraines. Others say their scalp broke out and their hair "actually hurt." A few noticed shedding within days: one reviewer washed her hair and was "pulling strands and strands" out.

The Drug Facts label tells you to stop using it if you get chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness, and one reviewer with atrial fibrillation decided she couldn't use it safely. If you have a heart condition, talk to your doctor before any minoxidil product.

Crowned has no minoxidil, no alcohol and no propylene glycol. It's a cosmetic leave-on for your scalp. If your skin is sensitive, try it on a small spot first.

The trial that keeps charging

Keranique's cancel complaints are some of the angriest we read. Women say they ordered "a one time purchase" and got charged $54.95 every month. One says she cancelled by phone and was charged twice afterward. Another ordered a $49.95 system and found a $107.89 balance on the invoice. A 74-year-old reviewer said she got a call telling her she owed $217.79. A Reddit user said they ignored her cancellation "each and every time" for two years. Keranique's BBB profile summaries describe the same thing.

That's way more expensive than it should be, and you never agreed to most of it.

Crowned is one serum. No four-step system to keep restocking, no trial that turns into a standing order you didn't ask for.

The Fingertip Trick

Part your hair where it looks thinnest. Put a few drops of Crowned straight onto the scalp there, then use your fingertips in small, slow circles until the serum disappears. Leave it on. Style as usual, or go to bed. That's the whole routine, once a day, every day, and it's the reason Crowned lands on your scalp instead of in your stomach or all over your pillow.

Crowned by Her Part is water-based (water is the first ingredient on the label) and made with five peptides, four of them modeled on growth factors studied in the hair cycle (aFGF, bFGF, IGF-1 and VEGF) plus a conditioning peptide, along with arginine, saw palmetto, Scutellaria root, rosemary, eucalyptus, soybean germ and wheat germ extracts, and vitamin E.

What the ingredient research shows:

  • Rosemary: in a randomized trial of 100 men with thinning hair, rosemary oil performed on par with 2% minoxidil at six months, with less scalp itching in the rosemary group (Panahi et al., Skinmed, 2015).
  • Saw palmetto: 50 men using topical saw palmetto products had higher average and terminal hair counts at 12 and 24 weeks (Wessagowit et al., Australasian Journal of Dermatology, 2016).
  • Growth-factor peptides: topical FGF-1 and FGF-2 brought on the hair growth phase earlier and kept it going longer in mouse studies (Lin et al., BioMed Research International, 2015).

Verdict: Crowned wins

Keranique's customers describe no visible results, straw-dry hair, scalp burns, heart warnings and charges after cancelling. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair with one water-based peptide serum, saw palmetto and rosemary, no drug, and nothing that turns your hair to straw. For women over 50, Crowned is the clear choice. More: Crowned vs Hers and rosemary oil vs minoxidil.

What you'll notice with Crowned, and when

Hair runs on a slow cycle: each strand grows for years, rests for two to three months, then makes way for the next (Paus and Cotsarelis, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). Crowned is built for that cycle, so the changes stack up in a clear order.

  • From the first days: a light, water-based serum that sinks in, clean roots, and a Fingertip Trick you'll actually look forward to.
  • In the first weeks: hair that feels softer, with more gloss and bounce. Eucalyptus extract in a scalp lotion improved measured gloss and bounce with ongoing use (Mamada et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2008).
  • Over the first two months: more lift at the root and hair that looks thicker where it grows from.
  • Months three to six: fuller-looking coverage where you used to see scalp, a ponytail with weight in it, and photos that look like you again. That's the window the ingredient studies measured: topical saw palmetto at 12 and 24 weeks, rosemary oil at six months.

Take a photo of the top of your head on day one and every two weeks after. Daily use builds the result, and the photos show it.
