Menopause hair thinning: why it happens and how to get fuller-looking hair again

In menopause, falling estrogen shortens the growing phase of each hair, so strands come in finer and more of them rest and shed at once. That's why you see less volume, more hair in the brush and scalp under bright light. You get fuller, thicker-looking hair back by caring for your scalp every day with a leave-on peptide serum, eating enough protein and wearing a cut that adds weight. Crowned by Her Part makes the daily step the Fingertip Trick.

Your hair was the thing people complimented. You want it back: thick in your hand, full in photos, worth wearing down. That is a completely reasonable goal, and it's the one Crowned is made for.

Why does hair thin during menopause?

Hair grows in a cycle. Each follicle has a growing phase that lasts years, a short transition of two to three weeks, and a resting phase of two to three months before the hair falls and a new one starts (Paus and Cotsarelis, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999).

Menopause shortens the growing phase. Dr. Kristen Lo Sicco of NYU Langone told the American Academy of Dermatology in 2025 that during menopause "the anagen phase of the hair cycle shortens so many women will note that their hair doesn't grow as long as it used to." Shorter growing time means finer strands and more hairs resting at once.

As estrogen drops, androgens have more say at the follicle, and thinning shows on top of the head and at the temples while the front hairline stays put. More in hair thinning at the crown for women. Cleveland Clinic reports that after menopause about two-thirds of women have thinning hair or hair loss. If it feels like half the women you know are dealing with this, that number is why.

Texture changes too. Dr. Lo Sicco points to drier, more brittle hair, which is why thinning hair in your 50s also looks flat and dull.

Menopause or something else?

Menopause is the main driver for women over 50. Dr. Mary Claire Haver's team at The 'Pause Life adds low iron stores, thyroid changes, stress, crash dieting and fast weight loss (including on a GLP-1 like Ozempic or Wegovy) to the list. Gradual thinning on top with your hairline intact points to hormones. A sudden wave of shedding a few months after a big change points to a trigger. A yearly blood panel with ferritin and thyroid covers the basics.

Can you get fuller-looking hair back?

Yes. Hormone-related thinning is slow and steady, and so is the fix. What you control every day is your scalp, your cut and your styling, and those are exactly what change how full your hair looks. Women who build a daily routine see more body at the root, less scalp under the bathroom light and a ponytail that feels like theirs again.

What gives you fuller-looking hair in menopause

A daily leave-on peptide serum

Shampoo is on your scalp for a minute. A leave-on serum works there all day. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair with a few drops along your parting line and over thin spots each morning, the Fingertip Trick, and no rinse.

Crowned by Her Part is made with five peptides (analogs of aFGF, bFGF, IGF-1 and VEGF, plus a CCL2-family conditioning peptide), arginine, saw palmetto, Scutellaria root, rosemary, eucalyptus, soybean germ and wheat germ extracts, and vitamin E.

See your old volume in the mirror again

Five peptides, saw palmetto and rosemary in one light leave-on that works on your scalp all day. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair with a routine that fits between coffee and makeup.

Start your Crowned routine

What the ingredient research shows:

  • Rosemary: in a randomized trial of 100 men with thinning hair, rosemary oil performed on par with 2% minoxidil, with both groups showing higher hair counts at six months and less scalp itching in the rosemary group (Panahi et al., Skinmed, 2015).
  • Saw palmetto: 50 men using topical saw palmetto products had higher average and terminal hair counts at 12 and 24 weeks (Wessagowit et al., Australasian Journal of Dermatology, 2016).
  • Growth-factor peptides: topical FGF-1 and FGF-2 brought on the hair growth phase earlier and kept it going longer in mouse studies (Lin et al., BioMed Research International, 2015).
  • Eucalyptus: ongoing use in a scalp lotion improved measured gloss and bounce (Mamada et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2008).

Crowned puts all of them in one leave-on serum for fuller, thicker-looking hair.

Protein at every meal

Hair is built from protein. Many women eat less in their 50s, especially on weight-loss medication. Protein at every meal feeds your hair and everything else.

Drop the biotin

Most women try biotin first. Unless you're deficient, which is rare, it grows your nails and leaves your mirror the same. Put that daily habit into your scalp instead. More in is biotin good for menopause hair loss.

A cut with weight at the ends

A blunt cut at or above the shoulder makes ends look dense. Ask your stylist to keep the weight and add lift at the crown. More in how to make thin hair look thicker and the best haircuts for thinning hair over 50.

Styling for volume

Rough-dry the roots with your head forward, use a light mousse at the root, keep oils off your scalp, and shift your parting line now and then.

What you'll notice with Crowned, and when

Hair works on a slow cycle: each strand grows for years, rests for two to three months, then makes way for the next (Paus and Cotsarelis, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). Crowned is built for that cycle, so the changes stack up in a clear order.

  • From the first days: a light serum that sinks into your scalp, no residue, and a Fingertip Trick you'll actually look forward to.
  • In the first weeks: hair that feels softer, with more gloss and bounce. Eucalyptus extract in a scalp lotion improved measured gloss and bounce of hair with ongoing use (Mamada et al., Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2008).
  • Over the first two months: more lift at the root and hair that looks thicker where it grows from.
  • Months three to six: fuller-looking coverage where you used to see scalp, a ponytail with weight in it, and photos that look like you again. That's the window the ingredient studies measured: topical saw palmetto at 12 and 24 weeks, rosemary oil at six months.

Take a photo of the top of your head on day one and every two weeks after. Daily use is what builds the result, and the photos show it.

The Fingertip Trick

  1. Part your hair where it usually falls.
  2. Apply a few drops of Crowned by Her Part along the line and over any area where scalp shows.
  3. Massage with your fingertips in slow circles until the serum disappears.
  4. Style as usual.
  5. Repeat every morning.

Frequently asked questions

Is hair loss during menopause normal?

Yes. Cleveland Clinic reports about two-thirds of women have thinning hair or hair loss after menopause. It's common, and you can get fuller-looking hair back with daily scalp care.

Does menopause hair loss grow back?

Shedding from a short-term trigger settles once the trigger passes. Hormone-related thinning is ongoing, which is why a daily leave-on serum like Crowned, plus the right cut, is the routine that keeps your hair looking full.

Does biotin help menopause hair loss?

Only if you're low in biotin, which is uncommon. Menopause thinning comes from the hair cycle, so put your effort on your scalp.

What is the best thing to put on thinning hair in menopause?

A leave-on peptide scalp serum you use every day. Crowned by Her Part gives you fuller, thicker-looking hair with the Fingertip Trick each morning, with no rinse.

Can I use Crowned on HRT or a GLP-1?

Yes. Crowned is a cosmetic serum that goes on your scalp, and it sits alongside whatever else is in your routine.

How fast will I see a difference?

Softer, glossier hair comes first, then lift at the root over the first two months, then fuller-looking coverage over months three to six.

Your next step

Feed your hair protein, get a cut that adds weight, and give your scalp the Fingertip Trick. Crowned by Her Part is the leave-on peptide serum for fuller, thicker-looking hair, so you wear your hair down and love what you see.
